Westmore Church of God conducted a ceremony on April 6 for the purpose of dedicating land purchased for future church expansion.

In March of 2006, the Westmore congregation voted to purchase the Rolling Hills Golf Course on Candies Lane. Previous owners of Rolling Hills operated the course for a final season before turning the property over to its new owners on November 1, 2006. Since then, church officials have been developing a master plan for the property, a final version of which was voted upon and accepted by the Westmore congregation on March 25.

The April 6 ceremony was held on the Rolling Hills property, portions of which have been undergoing renovation. Since November 1 the church has held a cleanup day, razed a maintenance storage shed, renovated a restroom facility and converted the former golf cart pavilion into a picnic and event pavilion.  The most extensive renovation has been to the former clubhouse which is being turned into a lodge to accommodate special functions, and will contain a large meeting space, café, game room and offices.

The April 6 land dedication took place at noon and was held under the new pavilion. The service consisted of a message from Westmore Senior Pastor Kelvin Page and prayers by and for the generations of people the eventual church campus will serve. The briefceremony concluded with a tour of the property.

The next day hundreds enjoyed a massive Easter egg hunt on the property. Children ages 2-10 searched for more than 10,000 eggs at the “Eggventure at Rolling Hills,” in the areas of the former 1st, 9th, 10th, and 18th holes of the Rolling Hills golf course.

The master plan will eventually involve relocation of the Westmore Church of God from its present location on 25th Street to the Rolling Hills property. The long-term construction plan includes a new sanctuary and educational facilities to be located in the vicinity of the former first and second holes of the course. Athletic fields are planned for an area to the south of the third hole fairway.

The former Oneighty youth building, located on the corner of Freewill and Old Freewill Roads, was sold late last year to the Church at Grace Point. The first construction project on the property will be a new youth facility to replace the Oneighty and will be located near the former third hole fairway. A formal groundbreaking will be held later this year.
