The Westmore congregation voted in March to purchase the Rolling Hills golf course. Over the last several months, committees from within the church have met to brainstorm, dream and envision the possibilities for the 175-acre property which is located adjacent to Interstate 75. Owners of the Rolling Hills golf course had offered the property for auction two years ago, but did not sell the land at that time. When an agreement with Westmore was reached earlier this year the contract stipulated that the previous owners could continue to operate the course until the church decided the plan to move forward was imminent. “This was a win-win situation for everyone,” stated Westmore Pastor Kelvin Page. “We were glad to allow the course to continue to operate in exchange for the upkeep. As long as we were in the planning stage, it was in everyone’s best interest to keep the course open.” The course will continue to operate until October 31, 2006 at which time Westmore plans to begin preliminary execution of the master plan. Myrick Gurosky and Associates (MG&A), a Birmingham firm which specializes in the development, design & construction of church and church-related facilities, has been contracted to draw up a master plan which will include several phases for the property to develop it into a functional church campus. Among the plans will be senior housing, a youth facility, recreational grounds and an educational complex. Future phases will include eventual relocation of the current 25th Street sanctuary and a possible assisted living facility. The master plan may also include the retention of a 9-hole, par 3 golf course. The hiring of this firm is a major step toward development of a beautiful campus on the property,” Pastor Page stated. “We are excited about the possibilities and look forward to what the future holds.” < Back to Legacy Report |
